At the center of the captivating rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His life was essentially untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was to tend to his flock of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the breezes across the solo tree on the peak were his main companions. Day after day, looking out for his responsibilities instilled in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
But, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. During one such occasion out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous scheme.
Stories of wolves prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a joke on the villagers.
One day he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but found nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This game persisted for a couple of more days. However, one day, a real wolf actually attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed website up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is hard to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
